Corporal Gurpreet Singh, 21, of Antelope, California, was a U.S. Marine with 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division, based at Camp Pendleton. He was killed in Helmand province, Afghanistan, on June 22, 2011.
Their Story
Gurpreet Singh was a 21-year-old Marine corporal from Antelope, California. He served with 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division, a unit based at Camp Pendleton that deployed as part of Regimental Combat Team 8 under II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward). His unit was operating in Helmand province, a region in southern Afghanistan that saw intense combat during the war.
On June 22, 2011, Corporal Singh was killed during operations in Helmand. The U.S. Department of Defense announced his death the following day, stating he died of wounds sustained while conducting combat operations. His battalion was engaged in counterinsurgency efforts in one of Afghanistan's most volatile areas at the time.
Singh's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By mid-2011, international forces were heavily engaged in the Helmand River Valley, a Taliban stronghold and center of opium production.
