Their Story

Markie Tyrell Sims was born in Citra, Florida, a small community north of Ocala. He entered the U.S. Army and was trained as a combat engineer. At the time of his death, he was serving as a Private First Class with the 38th Engineer Company, 4th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, out of Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington.

His unit deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign that began in October 2001. The 4th Stryker Brigade was operating in Kandahar province, a region that remained a focal point of insurgent activity throughout the war.

On December 29, 2012, PFC Sims was killed in Kandahar. The Department of Defense listed the cause as hostile action. Specific details of the incident were not released in initial casualty announcements. He was 20 years old.

His death was recorded in the Defense Casualty Analysis System on the day it occurred. Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan formally concluded in December 2014, transitioning to the follow-on mission Operation Freedom's Sentinel.

Sims's name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at Joint Base Lewis-McChord and is included on the online memorial of the Army's Fallen Warriors. He is remembered by family and former comrades from Florida and his military unit.
