Corporal Derek Todd Simonetta, 21, of Redwood City, California, served with Company B, 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
Their Story
Corporal Derek Todd Simonetta was killed in action on December 12, 2010, in Howz-e Madad, Kandahar province, Afghanistan. He was a member of the 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, part of the 101st Airborne Division's 2nd Brigade Combat Team.
According to the U.S. Department of Defense, Simonetta died of wounds sustained when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. The incident occurred during a patrol in southern Afghanistan, a region that saw intense fighting during the war.
Simonetta was 21 years old and a native of Redwood City, California. He joined the Army and was assigned to Fort Campbell, Kentucky, before deploying to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
His death was recorded among the 2,356 American service members who died during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led combat mission in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. The conflict concluded in December 2014, though a smaller follow-on mission continued.
