Their Story

Private First Class Anthony Warren Simmons was a 25-year-old soldier from Tallahassee, Florida. He served as an active-duty infantryman with Company D, 2nd Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, part of the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, out of Fort Campbell, Kentucky. His unit was deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.

In July 2010, Simmons was stationed at Combat Outpost (COP) Monti in Afghanistan's Kunar Province. The outpost, named for Medal of Honor recipient Jared C. Monti, was situated in the volatile Pech River Valley, a region known for rugged terrain and persistent insurgent activity.

On July 8, 2010, COP Monti came under direct fire from insurgent forces. According to U.S. Department of Defense records, Private First Class Simmons was killed during this hostile engagement. His death was recorded in the Defense Casualty Analysis System on the same day.

His death occurred during a period of intensified U.S. military operations in Afghanistan, a surge ordered by President Barack Obama in late 2009. The strategy aimed to secure population centers and degrade insurgent capabilities ahead of a planned transition.

Simmons was one of at least 102 U.S. service members killed in Afghanistan in July 2010, making it one of the deadliest months of the war for American forces at that time. The 2nd Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment sustained multiple casualties during its 2010 deployment.

Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led combat mission in Afghanistan, formally concluded in December 2014. The conflict, which began in October 2001, resulted in the deaths of over 2,400 American service members.
