Lance Corporal Sim, San, 23, of Santa Ana, California, was a U.S. Marine serving with Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division. He died in Bela Ba Luk, Afghanistan, on October 22, 2008, from hostile action.
Their Story
Lance Corporal Sim, San was deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign that began in October 2001. By late 2008, the conflict was in a period of intense fighting in Afghanistan's southern and eastern provinces, where U.S. and allied forces engaged Taliban and other insurgent groups.
Sim was assigned to Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, a unit based out of the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms, California. The battalion was operating in Afghanistan's volatile Helmand Province, a region known for insurgent activity and a center of opium production.
On October 22, 2008, Sim was killed during operations in the area of Bela Ba Luk, Afghanistan. The Department of Defense announced his death the following day, stating he died from wounds sustained while conducting combat operations. Reports from the time indicate his unit was involved in counterinsurgency missions in the region.
His death occurred during a year that saw heightened violence in Afghanistan. According to icasualties.org, 2008 was the deadliest year for U.S. forces in the conflict up to that point, with 155 service members killed in action. The 1st Battalion, 7th Marines sustained multiple casualties during its 2008 deployment.
Sim, San was 23 years old. He is memorialized on the Afghanistan War casualty rolls maintained by the Department of Defense and on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund's online 'Wall of Faces', which includes service members from later conflicts.
