Silva, Eduardo Sosa
U.S. Army Specialist Eduardo Sosa Silva, 25, of Greenfield, California, was killed in action on June 9, 2009, in Bagram, Afghanistan. He served with Task Force Thunder, 563rd Aviation Support Battalion.
Their Story
Eduardo Sosa Silva was a 25-year-old soldier from Greenfield, California, a community in the Salinas Valley. He entered the U.S. Army and was assigned to Task Force Thunder, part of the 563rd Aviation Support Battalion. His service reportedly included deployments to the Philippines and the Horn of Africa before his assignment to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
By June 2009, Operation Enduring Freedom was in its eighth year. The Taliban had regrouped and intensified its insurgency following earlier defeats. Improvised explosive device (IED) attacks and other forms of asymmetric warfare were increasing, contributing to a rise in U.S. and coalition casualties during that period.
Specialist Silva died on June 9, 2009, at Bagram Airfield, the largest U.S. military base in Afghanistan. The Department of Defense announced his death the following day. The official release stated he died of wounds sustained from an improvised explosive device while on a dismounted patrol in the vicinity of Bagram.
His death was recorded during a year that saw a significant escalation in violence. 2009 became the deadliest year for U.S. forces in Afghanistan since the initial invasion in 2001, with combat fatalities exceeding 300.
Silva's remains were returned to the United States. He was buried with military honors. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the California Capitol Park and on memorials in his hometown.
