Staff Sergeant Brandon Mark Silk was a member of the 101st Airborne Division, based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. His unit, part of the 101st Combat Aviation Brigade, was deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign that began in October 2001.
On June 21, 2010, Silk was killed during operations in the area known as Gaza Ridge, in Afghanistan's volatile eastern region. The Department of Defense announced his death the following day, stating he died of wounds sustained from enemy small arms fire.
Silk was 25 years old and a native of Orono, Maine. He served as a flight medic, a role dedicated to providing emergency medical care during air assault and medical evacuation missions. His unit, the 5th Battalion, 101st Aviation Regiment, operated UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters.
His death occurred during a period of intense fighting as international forces sought to disrupt insurgent networks. According to casualty records, Silk was one of 2356 American service members who died during Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.
