Their Story

First Sergeant Billy Joe Siercks was a senior non-commissioned officer in the U.S. Army's 10th Combat Aviation Brigade, a unit specializing in helicopter assault and support operations. He served as the first sergeant of Company F, 2nd Battalion (Assault), 10th Aviation Regiment, a role that placed him as the principal advisor to the company commander and the primary leader responsible for the welfare, discipline, and readiness of the soldiers in his charge.

In late September 2011, Siercks was deployed with his unit in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty releases, he was involved in a hostile incident in the country's eastern region. The specific details of the engagement were not disclosed in official announcements.

Following the incident, Siercks was medically evacuated from Afghanistan to the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany, the largest American military hospital outside the United States. The facility is a critical hub for treating combat-wounded personnel from the Middle East. He died of his wounds there on September 28, 2011.

His death was recorded as a hostile casualty, a classification used for deaths resulting from enemy action. At 32 years old, Siercks was among the more than 2,300 U.S. service members who died during the 13-year combat mission in Afghanistan.

The 10th Combat Aviation Brigade, known as the 'Tigers,' had been deployed from Fort Drum, New York, since the spring of 2011. The brigade's mission included providing air assault, medical evacuation, and reconnaissance across Regional Command-East, one of the most volatile areas of the conflict at that time.

First Sergeant Siercks was from Warsaw, Missouri. He is memorialized on the Afghanistan War casualty rolls maintained by the U.S. Army and on the website of the 10th Mountain Division, the parent command of his aviation brigade.
