Their Story

Andrew Jon Shields was a 19-year-old soldier from Battle Ground, Washington. He served as a Private First Class in the U.S. Army, assigned to the Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, Special Troops Battalion, 173rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, which was based in Bamberg, Germany before its deployment to Afghanistan.

Shields died on May 31, 2008, in Jalalabad, the capital of Afghanistan's eastern Nangarhar province. The area was a focal point for insurgent activity during the war. According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, his death was the result of a hostile incident, though the specific details of the engagement were not widely detailed in public releases.

His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. By 2008, the conflict had entered a phase of intensified counterinsurgency operations, particularly in Afghanistan's eastern regions.

PFC Shields was one of 2356 American service members who died during Operation Enduring Freedom, which concluded in December 2014. His name is recorded on memorials honoring those lost in the conflict, including the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum.
