Their Story
Charles Seth Sharp was deployed to Afghanistan as part of the Marine Corps' contribution to Operation Enduring Freedom. He served with the 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, a unit operating in Helmand Province, a region that saw intense fighting during the conflict's mid-period.
In the summer of 2009, U.S. and allied forces were engaged in a major offensive in southern Afghanistan, including Helmand. The operation aimed to clear areas of Taliban influence ahead of national elections. Garmsir district, where Sharp was stationed, was a known insurgent stronghold.
On July 2, 2009, Lance Corporal Sharp was killed during a hostile engagement in Garmsir. The Department of Defense announced his death the following day. He was 20 years old.
Sharp's death occurred during a period of escalating violence. 2009 became the deadliest year for international forces in Afghanistan up to that point, with a significant increase in combat casualties. His battalion was part of a larger push to secure the volatile region.
He is remembered as a native of Adairsville, Georgia. His service and death are documented in official military casualty releases and local news reports from the time.
The conflict in which he served, Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan, concluded in December 2014, transitioning to a follow-on mission. His death is one of more than 2,300 U.S. military fatalities recorded during that operation.
