Shannon, Michael Paul David

Sergeant First Class Michael Paul David Shannon was killed in action in Kabul, Afghanistan, on January 17, 2010. He was 52 years old. The Department of Defense announced his death, confirming he was assigned to the U.S. Army Control Group, a Reserve unit based in Saint Louis, Missouri.

Shannon was from the small community of Canadensis in Pennsylvania's Pocono Mountains. According to military records, his service included deployments not only to Afghanistan but also to the Philippines and the Horn of Africa as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan, began in October 2001. By January 2010, the conflict was in its ninth year, with a focus on counter-insurgency operations and the training of Afghan security forces.

Shannon's death was recorded during a period of intensified violence in and around the Afghan capital. His age, 52, was notable among combat fatalities, highlighting the role of experienced Reserve and National Guard personnel in the conflict.
