Their Story
Timothy Giles Serwinowski was a 21-year-old from North Tonawanda, New York, a community near Buffalo. He served as a Lance Corporal in the United States Marine Corps, assigned to 3rd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, based out of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. His unit was deployed to Afghanistan as part of Regimental Combat Team 7 under the I Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward).
In the summer of 2010, his battalion was operating in Helmand province, a southern region that was a focal point of intense combat during Operation Enduring Freedom. The Marines were engaged in a major offensive, Operation New Dawn, aimed at clearing Taliban strongholds around the strategic town of Marjah.
On June 21, 2010, Serwinowski was killed during a patrol in Helmand province. The Department of Defense announced his death the following day, stating he died while supporting combat operations. His death was recorded as hostile, a term used for service members killed by enemy action.
His death occurred during the peak of the U.S. troop surge in Afghanistan. Serwinowski was one of 102 American service members killed in Afghanistan in June 2010, making it the deadliest month of the war for U.S. forces up to that point.
He was survived by his parents and siblings. His body was returned to New York, and he was buried with military honors in Acacia Park Cemetery in Pendleton. His name is inscribed on the North Tonawanda Veterans Memorial.
The war in which he fought, Operation Enduring Freedom, formally concluded in December 2014, transitioning to the follow-on mission Operation Freedom's Sentinel.
