Their Story
Anthony Ramon Servin was born in 1990 and grew up in Moreno Valley, California. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force Forward, based at Camp Pendleton, California. His unit deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.
In June 2012, Corporal Servin was operating in Helmand province, a region in southern Afghanistan that was a focal point of intense combat for U.S. and coalition forces. The province was a stronghold for Taliban insurgents and a center of opium poppy cultivation, making it a strategically significant and dangerous area for military operations.
On June 8, 2012, Corporal Servin was killed in action. The Department of Defense casualty announcement did not specify the exact circumstances of his death, stating only that he died while supporting combat operations. His death was recorded in the Defense Casualty Analysis System on the same day.
He was 22 years old. His death occurred during the eleventh year of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. The conflict concluded in December 2014, when the mission was formally terminated and replaced by Operation Freedom's Sentinel.
Corporal Servin's name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Riverside National Cemetery in California. He is remembered alongside thousands of other service members who died during the conflict.
