Their Story
Senior Airman Adam Peter Servais was a combat controller with the U.S. Air Force's 23rd Special Tactics Squadron, an elite unit based at Hurlburt Field, Florida. Combat controllers are trained to deploy with U.S. Army Special Forces and Navy SEALs, directing close air support and controlling complex airspace in hostile environments. Servais had previously deployed on missions to the Philippines and the Horn of Africa before his assignment to Afghanistan.
In the summer of 2006, Servais was operating in Uruzgan province in southern Afghanistan. The province, with its capital at Tarin Kowt, was a known insurgent stronghold. U.S. and coalition forces conducted frequent counter-insurgency operations in the region.
On August 19, 2006, Servais was part of a joint U.S. and Afghan National Army patrol conducting a combat operation near Tarin Kowt. According to U.S. military reports, the patrol came under enemy small-arms fire during the engagement. Servais was fatally wounded in the firefight.
His death was reported by the Department of Defense on August 21, 2006. He was 23 years old. Servais was posthumously promoted to the rank of Senior Airman and awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart.
Servais was one of 2356 American service members who died during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led combat mission in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. His unit, the 23rd Special Tactics Squadron, is part of the Air Force Special Operations Command and has sustained casualties in multiple conflicts.
The conflict in which he served, Operation Enduring Freedom, concluded in December 2014, transitioning to the follow-on mission Operation Freedom's Sentinel. Servais is remembered on memorials at Hurlburt Field and in his hometown of Onalaska, Wisconsin.
