Their Story
Lance Corporal Lucas Christopher Scott was a 20-year-old Marine from Peebles, a small village in Adams County, Ohio. He served with the 2nd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, part of Regimental Combat Team 1, which was deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
In late 2010, his unit was operating in Helmand province, a major center of Taliban activity and the focus of a significant U.S. troop surge. The province saw intense daily combat, with Marines engaged in clearing operations and patrols through populated agricultural zones and desert terrain.
On December 3, 2010, Scott was killed during a hostile engagement. The U.S. Department of Defense announced his death the following day. No further operational details of the incident were released in public casualty reports.
His death occurred during the deadliest year of the war for international coalition forces. More than 700 service members were killed in Afghanistan in 2010, with heavy losses sustained in Helmand and neighboring Kandahar province.
Scott's body was returned to the United States. He was buried in his hometown of Peebles, Ohio. His name is inscribed on the Adams County Veterans Memorial.
Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led combat mission in Afghanistan, formally concluded in December 2014, transitioning to a training and advisory role. The conflict had begun in October 2001.
