Their Story
Staff Sergeant Marc Anthony Scialdo was killed in action on March 11, 2013, in Kandahar province, a volatile region in southern Afghanistan. The Department of Defense announced his death days later, identifying him as a member of Bravo Company, 4th Battalion, 3rd Aviation Regiment, Task Force Falcon, based out of Hunter Army Airfield, Georgia.
His unit, part of the 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade, provided critical aviation support for coalition forces. At the time of his death, Operation Enduring Freedom was in its final phase, following a major troop surge and subsequent drawdown. The conflict, which began in October 2001, would formally conclude in December 2014.
Scialdo was 31 years old and a native of Naples, Florida. Public records and casualty lists indicate he had previously deployed to other theaters associated with the broader Global War on Terror, including the Philippines and the Horn of Africa.
The circumstances of the incident that led to his death were reported by the DoD as a result of enemy action. No further operational details of the event were publicly released. His death was one of the last for U.S. forces in Afghanistan before the mission transitioned to Operation Resolute Support.
He is memorialized on the Afghanistan War casualty rolls maintained by the Defense Department and on several online veterans memorials. His service spanned a period of significant transition for U.S. military involvement in Afghanistan.
