Their Story

Matthew Scott Schwartz was a Technical Sergeant in the United States Air Force, assigned to the 90th Civil Engineer Squadron based at F.E. Warren Air Force Base in Wyoming. The 90th Civil Engineer Squadron provides essential services including construction, fire protection, and emergency response for the base's intercontinental ballistic missile facilities.

In early 2012, Schwartz was deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. He was stationed at Camp Bastion, a large British-run airfield and military base adjacent to Camp Leatherneck in Helmand Province. The base complex was a major logistics and operational hub for coalition forces.

On January 5, 2012, Schwartz died at Camp Bastion. The U.S. Department of Defense listed the cause as 'hostile' action. According to subsequent reports, his death was the result of an indirect fire attack, a term typically used for mortar or rocket fire, targeting the base.

Schwartz's death was one of several hostile incidents at the heavily fortified Bastion-Leatherneck complex that winter. His name was entered into the Defense Casualty Analysis System on the day he died. He was 34 years old.

Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan, began in October 2001. The conflict concluded in December 2014, transitioning to the follow-on mission Operation Freedom's Sentinel.
