Their Story

Sergeant Jacob Michael Schwallie was a cavalry scout serving with the U.S. Army's 1st Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, during Operation Enduring Freedom. His unit, Troop C of the 3rd Squadron, 73rd Cavalry Regiment, was deployed to eastern Afghanistan's volatile Kunar Province, an area characterized by rugged terrain and persistent insurgent activity.

On May 7, 2012, Schwallie was on patrol in the village of Cissterri, located in the district of Ghaziabad. According to the Department of Defense, his unit came under enemy small arms fire during the operation. Schwallie was reportedly struck and killed in the engagement.

The Department of Defense formally announced his death the following day. He was posthumously promoted from the rank of Specialist to Sergeant. At the time of his death, Schwallie was 22 years old and a resident of Clarksville, Tennessee, a city adjacent to Fort Campbell.

His death occurred during the final years of the U.S. combat mission in Afghanistan, a period marked by continued, high-intensity fighting in the country's eastern regions. Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign that began in October 2001, concluded in December 2014.
