Specialist Jordan Christopher Schumann was a 24-year-old soldier from Port Saint Lucie, Florida. He served with the 527th Military Police Company, 709th Military Police Battalion, 18th Military Police Brigade, based out of U.S. Army Garrison Hohenfels in Germany.
Schumann was deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. The conflict, which began in October 2001, was in its tenth year. U.S. troop levels had surged in 2010 and remained elevated through 2011.
On July 5, 2011, Schumann died in the Zabul province of Afghanistan. The Department of Defense listed the location as 'Route Virginia,' a designation for a road in the province. His death was categorized as the result of hostile action.
His death was recorded in the Defense Casualty Analysis System on the day it occurred. He was one of at least 42 American service members killed in Afghanistan during July 2011, according to casualty records.
Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan concluded in December 2014. Specialist Schumann's death occurred during a period of intense combat operations in the latter years of the campaign.
