Their Story

Nathaniel Joseph Augustus Schultz was a 19-year-old Marine from Safety Harbor, Florida. He served as a Lance Corporal with the 2nd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, part of Regimental Combat Team 7, I Marine Expeditionary Force Forward. His unit was based out of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, and deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

In the summer of 2010, his battalion was operating in Helmand Province, a region of intense insurgent activity. The unit was engaged in counterinsurgency operations, a mission that involved securing population centers and disrupting Taliban networks. Camp Dwyer, a forward operating base in the Garmsir district, served as a key logistical and operational hub for these efforts.

On August 21, 2010, Lance Corporal Schultz died at Camp Dwyer. The official casualty report from the Department of Defense listed the cause as hostile action. No further specifics regarding the incident were publicly released in initial announcements. His death was one of several suffered by U.S. forces in Helmand that month.

Schultz's death was recorded by the Marine Corps and noted in press releases and casualty lists. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at Camp Lejeune and on the Memorial Wall at the National Museum of the Marine Corps.

Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan, began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. The conflict concluded in December 2014, when the mission was formally ended and transitioned to Operation Freedom's Sentinel. The war resulted in the deaths of over 2,400 American service members.
