First Lieutenant Roslyn Littmann Schulte, 25, of the U.S. Air Force, was killed in a hostile incident near Kabul, Afghanistan, on May 20, 2009, while serving in Operation Enduring Freedom.

Their Story

First Lieutenant Roslyn Littmann Schulte was a 2006 graduate of the United States Air Force Academy. She was assigned to the 613th Air and Space Operations Center at Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii, and deployed to Afghanistan in 2009 as an intelligence officer.

Her role involved working with Afghan security forces. The mission aimed to build local capacity as part of the broader international effort in Afghanistan, known as Operation Enduring Freedom.

On May 20, 2009, Schulte was traveling in a vehicle on a road near Kabul. According to U.S. military reports, an improvised explosive device detonated near her convoy. The attack occurred in the Qargahee district, west of the capital.

Schulte died from wounds sustained in the blast. She was 25 years old. The Taliban reportedly claimed responsibility for the attack, which was part of a rising trend of IED use during that period of the war.

She was the first female U.S. Air Force Academy graduate to be killed by hostile action in Afghanistan or Iraq. Her death was recorded in the Defense Casualty Analysis System on the day it occurred.

Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led combat mission in Afghanistan, began in October 2001 and concluded in December 2014.
