Corporal Kyle Richard Schneider, 23, of Phoenix, New York, was a U.S. Marine killed in Helmand province, Afghanistan, on June 30, 2011, during Operation Enduring Freedom.
Their Story
Corporal Kyle Richard Schneider was a 23-year-old Marine from Phoenix, New York, a village on the banks of the Oswego River. He served with Echo Company, 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, part of Regimental Combat Team 8, II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward). His unit was deployed to Helmand province, a region in southern Afghanistan that saw intense combat during the war.
In the summer of 2011, coalition and Afghan forces were engaged in a major offensive, Operation Hammer Down, aimed at clearing Taliban strongholds in the mountainous areas of eastern Helmand. Schneider's battalion was operating in this volatile district, conducting counterinsurgency patrols.
On June 30, 2011, Corporal Schneider was killed by enemy small arms fire during a dismounted patrol, according to Marine Corps statements. His death was reported by the Department of Defense the following day. He was one of 42 U.S. service members killed in Afghanistan that month.
Schneider was posthumously promoted to the rank of corporal. His awards include the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Ribbon, and the Afghanistan Campaign Medal. He was survived by his parents and siblings.
