Their Story
Chief Warrant Officer Joseph Lee Schiro was killed in action on October 6, 2012, in Gardez, the capital of Afghanistan's Paktia province. He was assigned to Company B, 1st Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne), an elite unit conducting special operations missions as part of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force.
Schiro's death occurred during a period of intense fighting in eastern Afghanistan, a region where insurgent forces remained active. The 3rd Special Forces Group was heavily involved in training and advising Afghan security forces and conducting counterinsurgency operations in the volatile provinces along the Pakistan border.
According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, Schiro died of wounds sustained from enemy small arms fire. The incident was reported in the context of a larger engagement between coalition forces and insurgents in the Gardez area.
Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan, began in October 2001. By 2012, the conflict had entered a phase focused on transitioning security responsibilities to Afghan forces. Schiro was one of 310 American service members killed in Afghanistan that year.
He was 27 years old at the time of his death. Public records and memorial pages list his hometown as Orlando, Florida.
