Their Story
Patrick Wayne Schimmel was a 21-year-old Marine from Winfield, Missouri, a small community in Lincoln County. He served as a lance corporal with Golf Company, 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, which was operating as part of Regimental Combat Team 3, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade (Forward) in southern Afghanistan.
In the summer of 2009, his unit was deployed to Kandahar province, a region that saw intense fighting as part of the U.S.-led coalition's counterinsurgency campaign. The 2nd Battalion, 8th Marines had taken over battle space in districts west of Kandahar city earlier that year, engaging in operations to clear areas of Taliban influence.
On August 9, 2009, the Department of Defense announced that Lance Cpl. Schimmel had died the same day from wounds sustained during hostile action in Kandahar. Specific details of the engagement were not released in the initial casualty report. His death occurred during a period of escalating violence and a major U.S. troop surge in Afghanistan.
Schimmel's death was reported by several news outlets at the time, which noted his hometown and unit. He was one of several U.S. service members killed in Afghanistan during that month. Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S. military operation in Afghanistan, began in October 2001 and concluded in December 2014.
Memorials for Lance Cpl. Schimmel note his service with the 2nd Battalion, 8th Marines, a unit with a long history often referred to as the 'America's Battalion.' His name is recorded on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund's 'Wall of Faces' for casualties from the post-9/11 wars.
