Their Story
James Gregory Sartor was a U.S. Army Sergeant Major assigned to Company A, 2nd Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne), based at Fort Carson, Colorado. A native of Teague, Texas, he was on his fourth combat deployment at the time of his death, according to the U.S. Department of Defense.
On July 13, 2019, Sartor was engaged in combat operations in Maimanah, the capital of Faryab Province in northern Afghanistan. He was fatally wounded by enemy small arms fire during the engagement, the Department of Defense reported.
Sartor's death occurred under Operation Freedom's Sentinel, the U.S. military mission that succeeded the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) combat role in Afghanistan in January 2015. The mission involved counter-terrorism operations and support for Afghan government forces against insurgent groups, including the Taliban.
Following his death, Sartor's body was returned to the United States. The 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne) posted a tribute on its official Facebook page, stating he was 'a beloved warrior who epitomized the quiet professional.'
Sartor was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. He is survived by his wife and three children.
