Sergeant Jason Anthony Santora died during a combat operation in eastern Afghanistan's Logar province on April 23, 2010. He was 25 years old. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, Santora was serving with the 75th Ranger Regiment, an elite special operations unit.
Santora was from Farmingville, a community on Long Island, New York. He joined the Army and was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, headquartered at Fort Benning, Georgia. The battalion was regularly deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.
The operation in Logar province was part of a broader coalition effort to secure the region. On the day of his death, U.S. forces were engaged in a firefight with insurgent fighters. The Department of Defense listed the cause as hostile fire.
Santora's death was recorded as one of the 2,356 American service member fatalities during Operation Enduring Freedom. The conflict, which began in October 2001, concluded in December 2014. He was survived by his family in New York.
