Specialist Trinidad Santiago Jr. died on May 2, 2013, at Camp Buehring, a U.S. Army staging base in northern Kuwait. He was assigned to the 4th Battalion, 42nd Field Artillery Regiment, part of the 1st Brigade Combat Team from Fort Carson, Colorado. The unit was deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign that began in Afghanistan in October 2001.
Camp Buehring served as a key logistics and transit hub for forces entering and exiting Afghanistan.
