Their Story
Jeremiah Thor Sancho was a cavalry scout serving with the U.S. Army's 10th Mountain Division during Operation Enduring Freedom. His unit, part of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, was deployed to Kandahar province in southern Afghanistan, a region of persistent insurgent activity.
On October 13, 2011, Specialist Sancho was killed during operations in the village of Lam, within the Khakrez district. The Department of Defense announced his death the following day, stating he died of wounds suffered from enemy small-arms fire. No other details of the engagement were released.
His death occurred during a period of heightened U.S. military operations in Afghanistan, following a troop surge ordered in 2009. By late 2011, U.S. forces had begun a gradual drawdown, transferring security responsibilities to Afghan forces, though combat missions continued.
Sancho, known as 'Jeremiah' to his family, was from Palm Bay, Florida. He joined the Army after high school and was on his first combat deployment. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other commendations.
His loss was recorded among the more than 2,300 American service members who died during the 13-year conflict in Afghanistan. The war concluded with the withdrawal of U.S. and coalition forces in December 2014, though a smaller NATO-led mission continued.
