Their Story
Senior Airman Daniel Ray Sanchez was a Special Tactics combat controller with the U.S. Air Force's 23rd Special Tactics Squadron, based at Hurlburt Field, Florida. The unit's mission involves embedding with Army Special Forces and Navy SEAL teams to direct close air support and conduct reconnaissance. Sanchez, a native of El Paso, Texas, was 23 years old when deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.
In September 2010, U.S. and coalition forces were engaged in intense counterinsurgency operations, particularly in southern Afghanistan. The town of Tarin Kowt, the capital of Uruzgan province, was a significant hub for these efforts. The area saw frequent attacks from Taliban insurgents contesting control of the region.
On September 16, 2010, Sanchez was killed during a hostile engagement in Tarin Kowt. The U.S. Department of Defense announced his death the following day. Initial reports indicated the incident involved small arms fire, but the Air Force did not release further operational details, citing standard procedure for special operations casualties.
Sanchez's death occurred during the final years of Operation Enduring Freedom, a period marked by a U.S. troop surge and subsequent drawdown. The conflict, which began in October 2001, concluded its combat mission in December 2014. Sanchez was one of more than 1,800 U.S. service members killed in Afghanistan in 2010, the deadliest year of the war for American forces.
He was posthumously promoted to the rank of Senior Airman. Sanchez is remembered by his squadron as a dedicated and professional airman. His awards included the Bronze Star Medal and the Purple Heart.
