Their Story

Diobanjo Soriano San Agustin was a 32-year-old U.S. Army soldier from National City, California. He served with Company B, 4th Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, part of the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team based at Fort Carson, Colorado.

According to the U.S. Department of Defense, San Agustin died on September 4, 2018, in Bagram, Parwan Province, Afghanistan. He was fatally wounded by small arms fire during a combat engagement. The incident occurred during a partnered operation with Afghan forces.

San Agustin's death was part of Operation Freedom's Sentinel, the U.S. mission in Afghanistan that began in January 2015. The operation focused on counterterrorism and advising Afghan security forces. Combat in Afghanistan during this period was characterized by insurgent attacks and periodic engagements with U.S. and coalition troops.

Following his death, the Army posthumously promoted San Agustin from Sergeant to Staff Sergeant. His remains were returned to the United States. A memorial service was held at Fort Carson, where he was remembered by his unit.

San Agustin was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. He is survived by his wife and children. His name is inscribed on the National Infantry Museum's memorial at Fort Benning, Georgia.
