Their Story
Sergeant Lukasz Dariusz Saczek was killed in action on May 10, 2009, at a remote outpost in eastern Afghanistan. The location was designated Observation Post 3 Finley-Shields, a combat outpost in Kunar Province near the Pakistani border. This region was a focal point for insurgent activity during the war.
Saczek was a soldier in the Illinois Army National Guard, assigned to Company D, 1st Battalion, 178th Infantry Regiment. The battalion, part of the 33rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, was deployed to Afghanistan in 2008 as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. Their area of operations in Kunar was known for its difficult terrain and persistent combat.
According to military reports, the outpost where Saczek died came under direct enemy fire. The attack involved small arms and rocket-propelled grenades. Such engagements were a documented hazard for troops stationed in forward operating bases and observation posts along the border.
Saczek was 23 years old at the time of his death. He was a resident of Lake in the Hills, a suburb northwest of Chicago. His death was recorded by the Department of Defense and noted by local Illinois media, which reported on the loss of a citizen-soldier from the community.
Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan, began in October 2001. By 2009, the conflict had entered a phase characterized by a sustained counterinsurgency effort and a significant increase in U.S. troop levels. Casualties during this period were frequent.
The war in Afghanistan, under the Operation Enduring Freedom designation, formally concluded in December 2014. Sergeant Saczek's death occurred more than five years before that transition, during a period of intense fighting.
