Their Story

First Lieutenant Jonam Josue Russell was a 25-year-old infantry officer from Cornville, Arizona. He was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, part of the 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team based at Fort Stewart, Georgia. According to the U.S. Army, his service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.

On July 23, 2013, Russell was killed in the village of Soltan Kheyl, located in Afghanistan's Paktia Province. The Department of Defense stated his death resulted from hostile enemy action. The area was known for insurgent activity, and U.S. forces were engaged in security operations there as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.

His death was recorded in the Defense Casualty Analysis System on the day it occurred. He was one of several U.S. service members killed in Afghanistan during the summer of 2013, a period marked by continued combat operations as international forces prepared to transition security responsibilities to Afghan troops.

Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan, began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. The conflict concluded in December 2014, formally transitioning to a follow-on training and assistance mission. Russell's death occurred in the latter years of the combat mission.

First Lieutenant Russell's home of record was listed as Cornville, a community in Yavapai County. The Army did not release further specifics regarding the circumstances of the engagement in which he was killed.

His profile, like all memorials on this platform, is documented without political framing. It records the verifiable facts of his service and death, acknowledging the loss within the broader context of the conflict.
