Their Story
Staff Sergeant Keith Freeman Rudd was a 36-year-old soldier from Winder, Georgia. He served as an active-duty member of the United States Army, assigned to Company C, 3rd Battalion, 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade, which was headquartered at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. His unit was deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan.
On September 10, 2011, Rudd was killed in action at Bagram Airfield in Parwan Province, Afghanistan. Bagram served as a primary coalition base and a major hub for aviation operations throughout the conflict. The Department of Defense announced his death the following day.
Rudd's death occurred during the tenth year of Operation Enduring Freedom, a conflict that began in October 2001. By late 2011, the war was characterized by sustained counterinsurgency operations and a significant U.S. troop presence, with Bagram remaining a frequent target for insurgent attacks.
He is memorialized on websites dedicated to service members who died in the war, alongside others from his unit and brigade. The 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade, part of the 82nd Airborne Division, conducted air assault, medical evacuation, and general support missions across Afghanistan.
His death is recorded as one of the more than 1,800 U.S. military fatalities in Afghanistan that year. Operation Enduring Freedom concluded in December 2014, formally transitioning to Operation Freedom's Sentinel, though combat operations continued.
