Their Story
Sgt. Michael Currie Roy was a 25-year-old Marine from North Fort Myers, Florida. He was assigned to the 3rd Marine Special Operations Battalion (3d MSOB), Marine Special Operations Advisor Group, based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. His unit was deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.
On July 8, 2009, Roy was killed during operations in the Khash district of Afghanistan's Helmand province. The area was a center of insurgent activity and a focus for U.S. and allied forces during the 2009 surge of troops into the region.
His death occurred during a period of intense combat in southern Afghanistan. In the weeks surrounding his death, multiple U.S. service members were killed in Helmand province during a major offensive named Operation Khanjar, or 'Strike of the Sword'.
The Marine Corps listed the cause of his death as hostile. No further public details of the specific engagement were released by the Department of Defense. He was one of at least 44 U.S. service members killed in Afghanistan in July 2009.
Roy's death was documented by the Defense Department and recorded on memorials for those killed in Operation Enduring Freedom. The conflict, which began in October 2001, concluded with the U.S. withdrawal in December 2014.
He is remembered by his family, his unit, and on memorials including the 'Faces of the Fallen' project and the Afghanistan War casualty lists maintained by several news organizations.
