Their Story

Staff Sergeant Larry Ismael Rougle was a 25-year-old soldier from West Jordan, Utah. He served with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, part of the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, which was based at Camp Ederle in Vicenza, Italy. His unit deployed to Afghanistan in 2007 as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.

On October 23, 2007, Rougle was part of a joint U.S.-Afghan combat operation in the Sawtalo Sar mountain area of Kunar Province, a rugged region near the border with Pakistan. The operation, which involved elements of the 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry, aimed to clear insurgent positions from high ground.

During the mission, Rougle's element came under intense small arms and rocket-propelled grenade fire from entrenched insurgent fighters. The firefight occurred in the village of Aranus. According to U.S. military reports, Rougle was killed in this engagement.

The same battle on Sawtalo Sar mountain resulted in the deaths of two other American soldiers from his battalion, Sergeant Joshua C. Brennan and Specialist Hugo V. Mendoza. A memorial service for the three soldiers was later held at Forward Operating Base Blessing in Kunar Province.

Rougle's death was part of a period of intense combat in eastern Afghanistan during the fall of 2007. The 173rd Airborne Brigade sustained significant casualties during its 15-month deployment, which was one of the longest for a U.S. Army brigade at the time.

He was survived by his wife. Rougle was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. His name is inscribed on Panel 27E, Line 102 of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum's memorial pool in New York City, which honors those killed in the subsequent wars.
