Corporal Justin David Ross, 22, of Green Bay, Wisconsin, was a combat engineer serving with the 428th Engineer Company, 863rd Engineer Battalion. He died on March 26, 2011, in Saubalgay, Afghanistan, from hostile action.

Their Story

Justin David Ross was a 22-year-old soldier from Green Bay, Wisconsin. He served as a corporal in the U.S. Army Reserve's 428th Engineer Company, 863rd Engineer Battalion, part of the 372nd Engineer Brigade. His unit was based in Wausau, Wisconsin, and deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Corporal Ross's unit was responsible for construction and route-clearance operations, tasks critical to the coalition mission in Afghanistan. On March 26, 2011, he was operating in the village of Saubalgay, located in the volatile Kunar Province near the border with Pakistan.

According to U.S. Department of Defense records, Ross died from wounds sustained during a hostile incident. Initial reports from the International Security Assistance Force indicated the incident involved small-arms fire. No further details about the engagement were publicly released.

His death was recorded by the Defense Casualty Analysis System and reported by multiple news outlets in Wisconsin. He was one of at least 1,500 U.S. service members to die in Afghanistan by that point in the war.

Ross was posthumously promoted to the rank of corporal. He is memorialized on the Afghanistan War casualty lists maintained by the Pentagon and by veterans' groups in his home state.
