Their Story

Adam Corey Ross was a 19-year-old soldier from Spartanburg, South Carolina. He served as a Private First Class with the U.S. Army's 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, based at Camp Ederle in Italy. His unit, Company C of the 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, was deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.

In the summer of 2012, Ross's battalion was operating in Wardak province, a region south of Kabul known for insurgent activity. The unit was engaged in security operations in the district of Jaghato. According to U.S. Department of Defense records, the area saw regular attacks on coalition forces.

On July 24, 2012, Ross was killed by enemy fire during a combat operation in Jaghato. The Pentagon announced his death the following day. No further details about the specific engagement were released in initial casualty reports.

Ross's death was one of more than 2,300 U.S. military fatalities recorded in Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom. His unit, the 173rd Airborne Brigade, sustained significant casualties over multiple deployments to the country's eastern and central regions.

He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other service medals. Memorials for Ross were held in both Italy, where his brigade was headquartered, and in his hometown of Spartanburg.
