Their Story
Christian Joseph Romig was a 24-year-old soldier from Kenner, Louisiana, serving as a Specialist in the U.S. Army. He was a cavalry scout assigned to Troop A, 1st Squadron, 61st Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, out of Fort Campbell, Kentucky. His unit was deployed to eastern Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.
On January 5, 2011, Romig was killed during a combat operation in Khugyani District, Nangarhar province. The Department of Defense announced his death the following day. According to reports, his unit was engaged by enemy small arms fire during the operation.
Romig had previously deployed to the Philippines and the Horn of Africa before his assignment to Afghanistan. His death occurred during a period of intense fighting in the country's eastern regions, where U.S. and allied forces conducted counterinsurgency operations.
