Sgt. Justin Richard Rogers was a 25-year-old soldier from the small town of Barton, in New York's Southern Tier region. He served on active duty with the U.S. Army, assigned to Operations Company, Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. His unit was deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan.
On June 28, 2013, Rogers died from wounds sustained in combat. He was medically evacuated to the Craig Joint Theater Hospital at Bagram Airfield (BAF), the primary U.S. military medical facility in Afghanistan, where he was pronounced dead. The Department of Defense announced his death in a press release on July 1, 2013.
His death occurred during a period of intense fighting as international forces worked to transition security responsibilities to Afghan national forces. The war, which began in October 2001, was in its twelfth year. Casualty reporting from the Pentagon did not specify the exact province or incident that led to his fatal injuries.
