Their Story
John Michael Rogers was a sergeant in the United States Army, serving with the 1st Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division. His unit, part of the 1st Brigade Combat Team from Fort Campbell, Kentucky, was deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. The battalion was engaged in counterinsurgency operations in the country's volatile eastern provinces.
According to the U.S. Department of Defense, Sergeant Rogers died on June 27, 2010, at Forward Operating Base Blessing in Kunar Province. The base, a remote outpost near the Pakistani border, was a frequent target for insurgent attacks. His death occurred during a period of intense fighting following a major U.S. troop surge aimed at reversing Taliban momentum.
Rogers's service included deployments beyond Afghanistan. Records indicate he also served in the Philippines and the Horn of Africa, reflecting the global scope of U.S. military operations following the September 11 attacks. He was 26 years old at the time of his death.
His death was one of more than 1,700 U.S. service member fatalities recorded in Afghanistan in 2010, the deadliest year of the war for American forces. The conflict in Kunar Province, characterized by rugged terrain and persistent insurgent activity, accounted for a significant portion of these casualties.
Sergeant Rogers was from Scottsdale, Arizona. He is memorialized on casualty lists and veterans' remembrance sites. His battalion, known as the "Bulldogs," continued its deployment in Afghanistan following his death.
