Their Story

Private First Class Jessy Scott Rogers was a 20-year-old soldier from the small community of Copper Center, Alaska. He served in the U.S. Army as an infantryman assigned to Company D, 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, part of the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team stationed in Vicenza, Italy. His unit was deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign that began in October 2001.

On July 23, 2007, Rogers was killed during operations in the Sarobi District of Afghanistan, east of the capital, Kabul. The Department of Defense announced his death the following day. The area was known for insurgent activity, and U.S. and coalition forces conducted frequent patrols and counterinsurgency missions there throughout 2007.

Rogers's death was one of 117 U.S. service member fatalities in Afghanistan that year, according to Defense Department casualty records. The 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry, part of the first major conventional unit deployment to the country's volatile eastern region, experienced sustained combat during its tour.

Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan formally concluded in December 2014, transitioning to the follow-on mission, Operation Freedom's Sentinel. Rogers is memorialized on casualty lists and by veterans' groups honoring members of the 173rd Airborne Brigade. His hometown of Copper Center, with a population of fewer than 400 people, felt the loss of one of its own.
