Staff Sergeant Alan Lee Rogers, 49, of Kearns, Utah, was a U.S. Army soldier serving with the 1st Attack Helicopter Battalion, 211th Aviation Group. He was killed in action at Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan, on September 29, 2004.

Their Story

Alan Lee Rogers was a 49-year-old Staff Sergeant from Kearns, Utah, when he deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. He was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Attack Helicopter Battalion, 211th Aviation Group, a Utah Army National Guard unit based in West Jordan.

His unit, the 211th Aviation Group, was mobilized in early 2004. It provided attack helicopter support for coalition forces in Afghanistan, operating AH-64 Apache helicopters from Bagram Airfield, the main U.S. military base north of Kabul.

On September 29, 2004, Rogers was killed at Bagram Airfield. The U.S. Department of Defense announced his death the following day, stating he died from injuries sustained in a vehicle accident. No further details about the incident were released in the initial announcement.

Rogers's death occurred during a period of intensified insurgent activity in Afghanistan, three years after the initial invasion. The Taliban, though removed from power, had begun a sustained campaign of attacks against coalition and Afghan government targets.

At 49, Rogers was older than many of his fellow soldiers. His service included deployments not only to Afghanistan but reportedly also to the Philippines and the Horn of Africa as part of the broader global war on terrorism.

He is memorialized on the Utah Veterans Memorial Park website and is listed among the more than 2,400 U.S. service members who died during Operation Enduring Freedom, which concluded in December 2014.
