U.S. Army Sergeant Jose Rodriguez, 22, of Gustine, California, was killed in hostile action in Kandahar, Afghanistan, on June 19, 2012. He was assigned to Company A, 4th Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team.

Their Story

Sergeant Jose Rodriguez was a 22-year-old soldier from the Central Valley town of Gustine, California. He served with Company A, 4th Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, part of the 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team based at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state.

Rodriguez was deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign that began in October 2001. In June 2012, his unit was operating in Kandahar province, a longtime insurgent stronghold in southern Afghanistan and a focal point of the conflict.

On June 19, 2012, Rodriguez was killed by hostile fire. The Department of Defense announced his death several days later. No further operational details of the incident were released publicly at the time.

His death occurred during a period of intense fighting. 2012 was the deadliest year of the war for coalition forces, with over 400 U.S. service members killed. Rodriguez was one of 2356 American military personnel who died during Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.

The conflict formally concluded in December 2014, when the U.S. and NATO ended their combat mission. Rodriguez was survived by his family and community in Gustine, where he was remembered in local obituaries.
