Private First Class Arturo Emmanuel Rodriguez was a 19-year-old soldier from Bellflower, California. He was assigned to Company D, 2nd Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. His unit was deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.
Rodriguez died on March 12, 2011, at Forward Operating Base Orgun-E in Paktika province, southeastern Afghanistan. The Department of Defense announced his death the following day. According to the official release, he died of wounds sustained from enemy small arms fire.
His death occurred during a period of intense fighting in Afghanistan, following a U.S. troop surge aimed at reversing Taliban momentum. Paktika province, bordering Pakistan, was a known insurgent transit area and a frequent site of combat operations.
Rodriguez was posthumously promoted to the rank of Private First Class. He was one of at least 1,459 U.S. service members to die in Afghanistan in 2011, which was the deadliest year of the war for international coalition forces.
Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led combat mission in Afghanistan, began in October 2001 and concluded in December 2014. The conflict continued under the name Operation Freedom's Sentinel.
