U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Kristopher Dan Rodgers, 29, of Sturgis, Michigan, was killed in action on August 16, 2008, in the Korengal Valley, Afghanistan, while serving with the 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment.

Their Story

Staff Sergeant Kristopher Dan Rodgers, a 29-year-old soldier from Sturgis, Michigan, was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Hood, Texas. His unit was deployed to eastern Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.

On August 16, 2008, Rodgers was operating in the Korengal Valley, a remote and strategically significant area in Kunar Province known for intense combat. U.S. military outposts there, including the Korengal Outpost, were frequently targeted by insurgent forces.

According to U.S. Department of Defense records, Rodgers died from wounds sustained during hostile enemy action that day. No further specific details of the engagement were released in official casualty announcements.

His death was recorded during a period of heightened conflict in the region, as U.S. and allied forces sought to disrupt insurgent networks along the border with Pakistan. The Korengal Valley was later the subject of significant documentary coverage for its ferocious combat.

Rodgers was one of several thousand U.S. service members killed during Operation Enduring Freedom, which began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. The conflict in Afghanistan officially concluded for U.S. combat operations in December 2014.
