Their Story

Joshua Robert Rodgers was a U.S. Army aviator who deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. He served with Company B, 3rd Battalion, of the 82nd Aviation Brigade, a unit specializing in helicopter assault and support operations. The brigade was based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

On May 30, 2007, Rodgers was piloting a CH-47 Chinook helicopter on a mission in the Upper Sangin Valley of Helmand Province, a region characterized at the time by intense insurgent activity. The aircraft was reportedly engaged by hostile ground fire during the operation.

The helicopter was shot down. According to U.S. military reports, all personnel on board, including CWO2 Rodgers, were killed in the crash. The incident was one of several significant aviation losses in Helmand that year.

Rodgers's death was recorded by the Department of Defense. He was 29 years old. Prior to his deployment to Afghanistan, his service had included rotations to the Philippines and the Horn of Africa.

Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan, began in October 2001. The phase involving major U.S. combat operations concluded in December 2014.

The loss of CWO2 Rodgers is documented among the more than 2,300 U.S. military deaths that occurred during the conflict in Afghanistan. Each is memorialized individually by the Department of Defense.
