Their Story

Christopher Blake Rodgers was a lance corporal in the United States Marine Corps, assigned to 1st Battalion, 2nd Marines, Regimental Combat Team 2, of the I Marine Expeditionary Force Forward. His unit was based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, and deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.

In late summer 2010, his battalion operated in Helmand Province, a region of intense insurgent activity. The unit was responsible for security operations in areas surrounding the major coalition air base at Camp Bastion.

On September 1, 2010, Lance Cpl. Rodgers was killed by hostile action at Camp Bastion, according to Marine Corps records. Specific details of the incident were not widely disclosed in public reports, but the designation confirms he died in a combat-related event.

His death was recorded during a period of heightened operations in Helmand. The International Security Assistance Force reported frequent engagements with insurgent forces in the province throughout 2010.

Rodgers was 20 years old at the time of his death. He was from Griffin, Georgia, a city about 40 miles south of Atlanta.

The war in Afghanistan, Operation Enduring Freedom, continued for more than four years after his death. The conflict concluded with the formal end of the NATO combat mission in December 2014.
