Their Story

Sergeant James Christopher Robinson Jr. was born in Lebanon, Ohio, a city approximately 25 miles northeast of Cincinnati. He entered the U.S. Army and was assigned to the storied 1st Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, part of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault).

His unit, based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, deployed to Afghanistan in early 2010 as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. The 3rd Brigade was responsible for security operations in the volatile provinces of Paktiya, Paktika, and Khost, regions along the country's eastern border with Pakistan.

On August 28, 2010, Sergeant Robinson was at Forward Operating Base Boris in Paktiya province. According to U.S. Department of Defense records, the base came under indirect fire from insurgent forces. Robinson was reportedly killed by the enemy attack.

His death was one of several suffered by the 101st Airborne Division during that summer. The 187th Infantry Regiment, known as 'The Rakkasans,' sustained significant casualties throughout the deployment. Robinson was posthumously promoted from Specialist to Sergeant.

Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led combat mission in Afghanistan, began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. The conflict concluded in December 2014, transitioning to a follow-on training and assistance mission.

Sergeant Robinson's name is inscribed on Panel 7R, Line 63 of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum's memorial in New York City, which honors those killed in the subsequent wars.
