Their Story

Fernando Daniel Robinson was born on September 7, 1985, in Los Angeles County, California. He enlisted in the United States Army and was trained as an infantryman. By 2006, he was serving as a corporal with the 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, part of the 10th Mountain Division from Fort Drum.

His unit was deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. In the fall of 2006, U.S. and coalition forces were engaged in counterinsurgency operations in eastern Afghanistan's Kunar Province, a region bordering Pakistan.

On October 3, 2006, Corporal Robinson was on patrol in the vicinity of Asadabad, the provincial capital of Kunar. The patrol came under hostile enemy fire. Robinson was killed during this engagement. The Department of Defense announced his death two days later, on October 5.

Corporal Robinson was 21 years old at the time of his death. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. His remains were returned to the United States, and he was buried at Inglewood Park Cemetery in Inglewood, California.

His death occurred during a period of intensified combat in Kunar Province. The 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment sustained multiple casualties in the region throughout 2006 and 2007 during operations against Taliban and other insurgent forces.

Robinson is remembered on memorials at Fort Drum and in his hometown. His name is inscribed on Panel 21E, Line 46 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum in Georgia.
