Their Story
Staff Sergeant Carlo Montell Robinson was a 33-year-old soldier from Lawton, Oklahoma. He was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company (HHC), 1st Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, Combat Support Brigade, a unit based at Fort Polk, Louisiana.
Robinson died on January 17, 2009, at Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan's Parwan province. The U.S. Department of Defense listed the cause of his death as hostile action. No further operational details of the incident were publicly released in initial casualty announcements.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By early 2009, the conflict was in its eighth year, with a focus on counter-insurgency operations and training Afghan security forces.
Robinson was one of at least 32 American service members who died in Afghanistan in January 2009, according to Defense Department records. The month was part of a period of escalating violence that preceded a major U.S. troop surge later that year.
As a member of a Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, Robinson's unit was typically responsible for improving the security and mobility of forces in its area of operations. Such brigades handled route clearance, infrastructure protection, and convoy security.
His death is recorded on memorials for soldiers from Fort Polk and among the more than 2,400 U.S. service members who lost their lives during the Operation Enduring Freedom mission, which concluded in December 2014.
